Power Hammers

It is often thought that the power hammer is not a part of traditional blacksmithing.  Power hammers have been a part of the trade ever since we harnessed  sources of power.  This is Christoph Friedrich using a 16th century water- powered trip hammer in Switzerland.
We have three hammers at the forge.  This is a 100 lb. Beaudry  hammer in the main forge.  In this picture, we are tapering and adding a tenon to the stem of a 10 foot sunflower.  The sheer force yet precise control of the large hammer has also empowered me to try new techniques and create new product that would have been impractical with a smaller hammer.
