The Treadle Hammer

Besides crushing aluminum cans, this tool has many other functions in the forge. The foot- powered  hammer works off a series of levers that transfers power from the treadle to a weighted hammer head and onto the metal.  Note the small tools hanging on the side of the press.  A number of veining, engraving, and punching operations can be accomplished with this tool.

Using a hand-held hot cut, this bar can be split by one person instead of a smith and his striker  working at the anvil.
