Love
Panel - a design study
|
| The
initial concept behind the Love panel was to
depict one of the highest forms of love -
that of the mother and child. The Madonna
and Christ child seemed ideal. |
 |
| Upon
further reflection, it was felt that we
wanted to expand the concept that
there are many manifestations
of love. |
| We
settled on three groupings to represent
love - love in the family, inter-generational love,
and worldly love through the people
approaching from the distance. An
important element in this design was the
touching of a hand within each group. |
|
 |
Immersing
ourselves in a study of hands seem to
naturally lead us to the difficult
concept of the hands of God. To enfold
the panel in God's embrace became our
goal. How to accomplish this became
our challenge for the next several months, |
| With
the help of sketches and ideas from friends
and other artists, and ongoing dialogue with the church
committee, we began to gravitate toward a
less literal depiction. |
| We
wanted to blend the image of a hand into the
landscape so that it would be discovered
rather than seen from first glance.
The inclusion of the rising sun was a late
addition to the design. In retrospect
it seems essential. |
