Working with a
friend who's a designer, Jeff became involved with the
renovation of an office building for an oil and
gas exploration company
in Charleston, WV.
Geology was now the subject to be learned. |
 |
|
The value of
spending time with the client in a venue relating to
the project at hand is wonderfully illustrated
in this commission. Through a visit to the
office, Jeff became familiar with some of the images
of geology and began developing a concept for the
staircase and railing the project required. |
 |
|
Traveling this
staircase should give the impression of moving through
the strata of the earth. A one-sixth scale maquette was made to
present the design to the client. |

 |
 |
|
The
maquette serves not only as a presentation tool but as a
visual aid at the construction site. |
 |
Jeff will produce
two sets of stairs which will meet at a landing.
On the lower level the staircase
(not shown on the model) will gracefully widen at the
bottom. |
|
Following the same
design, a wall sconce was designed that may be used for supplemental
lighting in other areas of the office. |

We made a wooden template that would come back to the
forge to be used to fabricate the metal stringers,
treads and risers. |
