With the stairs in place,
our attention again turn back to the forge and the
detail work remaining. One of the first was
the top rail that runs length of the stairs.
Many different designs were considered before work
began. |
Forging the rail at the power hammer often
takes two to keep it running true. |

The special die made for forming the top rail. |
The rail needed to be drilled onsite to because of
the close tolerances. |

Fitting the top cap to the staircase required
meticulous fine tuning on site |
Jeff's yoga classes have unexpected benefits -
here drilling the railing |
The rail is tapped to receive a decorative
fastener inserted flush with the top of the cap -
making a smooth surface |
The cap is fastened in two pieces and welded
together. A cardboard shield keeps sparks
away from finished work |

The top cap finished and
installed on the upper and lower section of stairs. |
